International Purchasing Agent (Houston, TX)

Merfish United, a member of the Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. family of companies, is the largest master distributor of standard pipe products in the United States, serving wholesale distributors only from our fleet of flatbed trucks. We are looking for a Purchasing Agent to join our Houston, Texas-based team!

Position Description and Responsibilities:

We are searching for an outgoing individual with demonstrated expertise in international procurement to join our purchasing team. The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent analytical ability and advanced skills in Microsoft Excel. The Purchasing Agent is a perfect position for an intermediate-level professional looking for further advancement in their purchasing career.

Responsibilities:

  • Request cost proposals and negotiate a price
  • Research and compare suppliers, pricing, goods, and services
  • Select the most suitable supplier(s) in terms of reliability, product quality, and cost efficiencies
  • Prepare forecast and create purchase orders
  • Ensure validity of purchasing terms and conditions
  • Monitor inventory levels and determine buying or transferring needs
  • Create and maintain reports for tracking and analysis
  • Work with team members to expedite material and resolve challenges
  • Foster and maintain positive, long-term, supplier relations

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience as a purchasing agent or relevant role
  • Background in international goods procurement
  • Understanding of Incoterms
  • Familiarity with port operations
  • Knowledge of forecasting concepts and ability to build a forecast
  • Degree in business administration, procurement, or related field preferred
  • Experience with ERP systems; Profit 21 experience a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 Office apps, with advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills
  • Solid organizational and documentation skills
  • Strong research and analytical skills
