Human Resources Coordinator (Houston, TX)

Merfish United, a member of the Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. family of companies, is the largest master distributor of standard pipe products in the United States, serving wholesale distributors only from our fleet of flatbed trucks. We are looking for an HR Coordinator to join our Houston, Texas-based team!

Position Description and Responsibilities

The HR Coordinator is responsible for supporting the HR team related to day-to-day processes and project work. They provide superior support inside and outside the organization over the phone, email, MS Teams, and other channels. This position requires strong communication skills, a professional, fun attitude, and a team player!


  • Be the primary individual for processing and entering employee changes into the human resources information system, or HRIS system. This includes new hire data, compensation, job changes, and other significant information.
  • Provide compliance review to ensure the proper documentation is filed correctly and kept confidential.
  • Assistance with other HR system processes, including unemployment claims, verifications of employment, garnishments, child support claims, and similar HR concerns.
  • Responsible for assisting with various human resource functions, including employee benefits programs, maintaining employee personnel files, maintaining I-9 files, and coordinating training programs, including the organization of onboarding course materials.
  • Assist with recruiting and tracking candidates’ status in HRIS and pre-employment vendors.
  • Provide general support to Payroll and the HRIS system.
  • Performs customer service functions by answering employee requests and questions.
  • Assists or prepares correspondence as requested.

  • Individuals will be trusted with highly confidential information and updating this information in the system. They must be able to maintain extreme confidentiality and be completely trustworthy.
  • Knowing when to ask the right questions to ensure the correct process is followed.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize and schedule work for successful completion on time, and be very detail-oriented.
  • Strong support background, tenacious follow-up, and is motivated by delivering high-quality results quickly
  • Be committed to serving employee needs and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.


  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 Office apps, including Word and Excel
  • Experience with Paycor HRIS and Payroll systems preferred
  • Has a working knowledge of Human Resources practices and procedures
  • Good communication and analytical skills

Education and Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 1-2 years of related experience in human resources
  • Responsibilities with administrative functions
