Health, Safety & Environment (“HSE”) Coordinator (Houston, TX)

Merfish United is the leading master distributor of domestic steel pipe, globally sourced steel pipe, copper tubing, plastic pipe, electrical conduit and related products to independent wholesale distributor customers within the plumbing and heating; pipe, valve and fittings (PVF); HVAC; waterworks; fire protection; pool supply; lumber yard; fence; steel service center and electrical supply markets.

We are seeking candidates for the position of HSE Coordinator, reporting to the Vice President of Operations.   This position will ideally be based in Houston, TX and cover 13 Distribution Centers across the United States.

Health, Safety & Environment (“HSE”) Coordinator

The Health, Safety & Environment (“HSE”) Coordinator will be responsible for the implementation and management of the overall corporate HSE and corporate risk management programs. This position will manage the corporate safety program while ensuring compliance with all Federal (e.g., OSHA, DOT, etc.), state, local, and other applicable safety codes and regulations with assistance from an outside consultant.

Risk Management:

  • Monitors and analyzes risk and safety concerns within the organization and reports findings and recommendations for mitigating the risk
  • Creates and facilitates safety trainings and train-the-trainer programs

OSHA Compliance and Safety:

  • Implements policies and processes to ensure organizational compliance with OSHA standards and other applicable health and safety regulations
  • Ensure compliance and communication and reporting to regulatory bodies
  • Conducts on-site visits to Distribution Centers throughout the country to conduct safety audits and training; prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventative measures; follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
  • Track incident metrics and apply findings; maintains safety files and records
  • Develops and manages all disaster and emergency planning management activities across the Company

Workers Compensation:

  • Oversees all aspects of the workers’ compensation program
  • Investigates accidents and work-related injuries to determine causes and circumstances; conducts post-accident investigation and prepares reports identifying possible accident causes and hazards and corrective actions

Vehicle and Fleet Management:

  • Partners with Transportation Manager on fleet maintenance, safety & DOT compliance issues
  • Investigate accidents and work-related injuries to determine causes and circumstances and processes necessary to process vehicle accidents

Skills, Experience, and Education:

Demonstrated knowledge of federal, and state safety and occupational health standards, laws, codes, policies

  • Knowledge and experience reporting requirements for occupational accidents, injuries, illnesses, and subsequent reporting requirements and ability to research and reference those regulations
  • 7+ years of experience in EHS roles or equivalent, DOT experience and distribution industry preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build strong cross-functional relationships
  • Travel required (10-15 percent)
  • Proficiency with Windows based applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
